Can and I plant them and how deep? Do I leave the (about 20-25 cm) long shoots on? The potatoes were forgotten in a box in a dark pantry.

plant them, you have nothing to loose. Give them some aerated soil, in a sunny sheltered spot and let loose! Plant them so the shoots are barely pushing through the soil (I think this is how it works, MrK 'does' the vegie garden). As the sprout grows, top with more soil. Then leave to flower and viola! spuds!

I just stand at back door and throw any sprouting spuds under bushes and on garden, lots of spuds growing all over now.

Don't lie. You're trying to hit the neighbours cats with them, as I do.

As kiwimade64 says. Still hot in Auckland, and we have grown potatoes over autumn many times.
