I put milk powder in when I planted & a piece of copper wire thru the stem. Wondering if I should give it some liquid lime. I only have 2 plants so don't want to mix up a pile of spray

Hi niffer13-is the spray for plant food or bugs and blight? Blight is copper and other than green beetle which is a hand squishing job I can't answer your question. They love wilted and chopped up comfrey leaves (pottassium) for flowering and fruiting) in the soil with good compost when you plant. And plant your tomato deeper than it was in the pot or punnet-they will grow more roots. BUT-your liquid lime-is it the Roy Bubb brilliant stuff from Australia? The crushed fossilised coral and shells etc? It may be under a different name now but what a fantastic product. I am looking for that- best lime composite fert I ever used. My brother used to import it about 20 years ago,but now hard to get in NZ.

No it was just lime mixed in water. I saw it on a U-tube clip. I want to spray for blight & bugs as well. My 2 tomatoes are planted in a tomato planter from the redshed so I can put all liquid into that.

I've got some of that so will use. How often should I use weekly?

I wouldn't use lime at all, tomatoes are acid lovers so flowers of sulphur for mine along with seaweed tea and nettle juice.

This is a garden myth. MINUTE amounts of copper might dissolve and pass into the sap flowing up through the trunk, but plants are quite tolerant of low concentrations - . And high concentrations of copper salts have long been needed as effective fungicides (e.g. Bordeaux mixture - copper sulphate and lime). At best the copper object may help to inhibit fungal attack near the wound, which would usually heal with time.
Go and buy some copper spray and use that every 2 weeks throughout the growing season.

I have used the copper wire for many years = no blight whatsoever. got over 350 on my sweet 100 last year covered in flowers and small tomatoes again this year. . i use a liquid fertilizer - you know exactly what you are giving your veges instead of guessing whats in your hand with powdered kind I use old pantie hose legs cut cross wise and then cut in half to make ties - waste not want not as they say. By the way I am an 82 year old lady gardener. Happy Gardening to you all. Noni R.
Copper here too and try not to water foliage when watering. Blight is soil borne and the soil splashes onto the leaves transfer it as well and wet leaves are disease prone. I always remove lower leaves from my plants and have not had blight for several years. I do not spray.

And we haven't had blight either despite using nothing some years. It's not that common, you need a fair amount of humidity too. but it's not your wire, it's just the fact you didn't get it. If you want to be safe, spray. or just risk it. late blight doesn't matter much anyway, the fruit is done, early blight is the PITA.
