re 811, hi Julie, we have chickens and they really just look after themselves. Some people go on about worms and mites and fleas and bugs and diseases, and how you have to do this that or the next thing for them, but weve had chickens for about 15 years and never treated for these things and never had problems with them.Once a week I fill their auto feeder with wheat, every 2-3weeks I clean the manure from the bottom of the coop and put it in the compost, and EVERYDAY I go out and collect my dozen or so free range eggs.Really Really Easy :)

Worm farm in sink re -allnall My worm farm is in a stainless steel kitchen sink and it is ideal for starting out. I have it on a slight angle with an icecream container underneath the sink hole to collect the worm tea. Good Luck

I got the latest Homegrown today. Tomatoes.Perfect timing NZgardener!

stevee6, Oct 20, 4:56pm
Gosh - totally forgot this thread*guilty look*.
Hardening off my baby tomato plants in preparation for planting them out next week, otherwise sowed bush beans, cucumbers, carrots, beets and spinach outside and courgettes, basil and melons inside. Asparagus season in our garden was over almost before it began - third year too, but the artichokes are wonderful. Grape has lots of flower buds yayyy - last year we had none!

whiskey13, Oct 20, 5:40pm
2nd year for our aspargus and we've had a few feeds, time to "put it to rest" for the season. Tomato seedlings are hardening off too ready to be planted this weekend as well as cabbage and i think I'll leave the squash and watermelon for another couple of weeks before they go outside.

stevee6, Oct 20, 5:49pm
Fabulous new Homegrown - as you said, perfect timing!

Had a bit of a spend up at the garden nursery today. Hubby thinks my tomato seedlings that Ive nurtured from seeds are taking too long, so purchased bigger ones (grrr), also gotblackcurrant and blueberry bushes, bay leaf, Dill, Basil, some more seed spuds for later on, capsicum, chocolate capsicum even!, cucumber and zuchini(sp). The latter will be planted out in the tunnel house once some space opens up. We are eating lettuces that Ive grown from seed and also the brassica that I planted in the autumn. Will be putting my lemon tree back into the tunnel house as a permanent feature. Its not doing well at all outside. Also got me some beetroot and they have a punnet of snow pea seedlings for $1 so we snapped them up! Will have great fun planting all this out once it stops raining and warms up a little. until then, they are snug as in the tunnel house. Hope everyone has a great long weekend.

jules., Oct 21, 9:59pm
The long weekend is all but upon us and I have to work, Grrrrrrrr.
Dont know if its really time to plant out yet even if it is Labour weekend and we are in the winterless north.
Its been blowing a gale here the past few days.
I have peas in and more waiting for a home also beans and around a dozen or so tomato and capsicum plants.
Spring/Summer seems to be taking its time to arrive this year, so might give it a few more weeks and see how we get on.

Have a fab weekend everyone :)

Hi BjKiwi. thanks for posting the chicken info. it's something I'mthinking of having here. and your info is encouraging. thank you :-)

stevee6, Oct 22, 4:18pm
Arggggggg - Lynda's got my brand new climbing frames for her tomatoes, basil and beans! I only bought them last week and put in the beans and sugar snaps underplanted with herbs and my heritage cherry tomatoes, and I thought I was being innovative *snivels*.

jules., Oct 22, 7:20pm
have been so busy in my new garden. its been ages since i looked at the postings here. very interesting and helpfull info on keeping chooks, thanks :) we were supposed to get our 3 hens delivered today, but sadly the owner went out this morning to discover a dog have got into the inclosure over night and she now only has 2 of 5 left. very sad! the kids were really looking forward to them after school, will have to tell them they couldnt make it today now, cant tell them the horrible truth :( hopefully can get some others in the next fews days, so if anyone has any other info about them, i would love to here it please.

jules., Oct 23, 2:01am
think i will need to get a copy of that too, the toms didnt go too well last season, but that was really due to lack of time (and a bit of laziness) to tend them properly :(
had a really good go in the garden today. cleared out a good 6 barrow loads of weeds and old caulis etc.
squashed hundreds of snails too!
all ready for a final dig over with some compost and all the seedlings can go in, yay, roll on the good weather!
have a great weekend of planting everyone :)

simplesean, Oct 25, 1:44am
It was a beautiful day here today. I got so much done and got sunburnt too!

jules., Oct 25, 4:09am
hi all how is everyones long weekend of gardening going. the weather could be better, but i figured it was only the odd shower up here so out i went and tended to the garden. i put my trays of seeds outside today to harden, i have even left them on the deck for the night. my mum decided to get the kids 2 more chooks today. it was great idea untill i let one go after clipping its wings, bl**dy thing still managed to jump up and get over the fence. we serched and serched to no avail. we went out and when we got home the lovely neighbours had cornered her in their yard and put her back. heres hoping she decides to stay with us :) the weather supposed to get better tomorrow and monday so happy gardening!

jules., Oct 26, 3:52am
Well we got summer today, was a very hot and sunny day, wonder how long it will hang around for, haha.

juliewn, Oct 26, 9:47am
Bumping the thread. no gardening time this weekend for me. hopefully will be soon though. Have a lovely Labour Day everyone. in the best place possible. your gardens!

stevee6, Oct 26, 3:27pm
My tomato seedlings in trays have been out now for a few days - if they're not hardened up by now, they never will be! I was a dope though - sowed all my seeds in trays and wasn't able to repot more than a few(they've been outside for a couple of weeks and now in the ground - doing well) so now I've got trays of lanky heritage tomatoes unfit to sell but I hate to waste them. At least the ones I repotted have grown into sturdy little plants so I guess it was a useful learning curve.

rei7, Oct 26, 4:17pm
Trying a new tip I am putting foam rubber off cuts in the bottom quarter of my big tomato containers aka paint buckets and old rubbish tins. Last year my tomatoes were ok but needed a lot of watering.Hopefully this will hold the water in there for the tomatoes as when I tipped out the spent plants from last season the bottom was totally dry. Also saves on potting mix/compost. Will and wait and see how it goes.

jules., Oct 27, 12:11am
good on you simplesean :)
it has been really nice to see the sunshine!
i too got so much done in the garden over the weekend.
i planted out chilli, capsicum, cucumber, apple cucumber, lettuce, and 56 corn plants!
i didnt put the tomatoes out just yet as i think they are still too small. lucky, its got quite cold here today with the rain. nice when the suns out, but when its not, its quite chilly.
the potatos are going great guns, i mounded them up again yesterday and gave them some more compost and potato fertilizer.
hope everyone else had a good productive weekend.

ords, Oct 27, 1:25am
Hope everyone had a great long weekend. We left the farm for a few days which was great. I got out and planted my seedlings today. they had wilted a bit so Im hoping they still take off. So planted all the snow peas, beetroot, cabbage (red and normal). I also put the tomato plants in bags in the tunnel house. Planted our berry bushes outside and I also put the lemon tree back in the tunnel house permanently. It just doesnt do well outside. I put some lawn clippings on the spuds. planted some carrot tape and have a bit spare for the parsnips. I really do need another raised garden bed lol.

jules., Oct 27, 8:16pm
I know this is really dumb, but.

If I put in early and main crop spuds at the same time does this mean one will be ready before the other!
I put two lots in, but now cant remember which ones are which!
One lot are flowering now if that helps!

juliewn, Oct 28, 6:18am
Hi Everyone. :-) That sounds interesting Rei. let us know how you get on. my tomatoes are not far from planting out - if I only had time to dig another part of the garden - it's getting added onto in stages at the moment. building our new home has priority. and I'm looking forward to being able to establish the full size of vege garden areas - I have a part of the section that's 10m x 9.5m, with a long narrower extension on one end. I have the garden planned in my mind. and it will be very good to get it started then organised then established.
