Mealy bug problem

matuq, Jun 18, 4:01pm
I'm looking after plants at work and among them there's a couple of ferns. I've sprayed them but short of rubbing off the bug from each plant I can't seem to get rid of it. Anyone had any real success please? I've removed them so they're away from all other plants. Any advice appreciated.

I got a bad infestation in my glass house on cacti. The only way I got it under control was spraying with methylated spirits. Not sure how that would go on ferns. Ordinary sprays won't penetrate the waxy coating on them so is quite useless.

i have used meths with good success as well, perhaps dilute it 50%

I have been using a cotton bud dipped in meths to wipe them off my indoor fern and its fine . It had lots of spots to start with and now if I do it weekly there are only a few to remove each time. I did read that you could spray the fern with meths if the infestation was very heavy.

Yep those little scent spray thingies that females have in their bedroom do a great job. Just make sure the old girl is not around when ya flog it. LOL

they live in the pot on the roots as well so a systemic insecticide is better, soak the pot in a buckect of spray mix and that should sort them out?

Apparently juvenile Mealy Bugs are easier to treat than mature ones for some reason. perhaps they develop a waxy protective covering impervious to sprays, (unless systemic) and the sprays cannot penetrate the covering. ?
