Stripping paint off a deck

cherieandmark, Feb 11, 9:18am
Does anyone know the best way/product to do this? We purchased our current home with two decks painted a solid green. We want to get rid of the green paint completely and stain the decks.

Wondering how to remove all the paint, especially in the grooves of the decking timber.

Cheers for any suggestion.

I have a similar issue. Considered paint stripper but not user / environmentally friendly.
Am considering hiring a floor sander and manually cleaning grooves with disc sander.will need to punch nails in though.

Jolly difficult ceebee2 isn’t it? That sounds like a heck of a lot of tricky work. Wondering if it would be better just to replace all the timber and start again!

I would replace the timber, you are going to be there for a month of Sundays, eventually the grooves will get to you . good luck!

whats wrong with good old caustic soda, wet the deck, sprinkle it on dry, rub it over a couple of times with a stiff broom, then lightly water blast, repeat for any remaining paint

This, and I wouldn't bother staining it, you will have to do it forever once you have, Ours is pine and ten years old, I just water blasted it for the first time and it looks like new again and in great condition.

Thanks for that advice. We are getting it ready to sell and thought stained decks look very attractive. Didn’t realise the stain had to keep getting redone. How often would you need to restain?

or turn the timber upside down and start with a clean surface

+1.
Cover it in 3mm deck tread?

I tried sanding down a deck. Quickly gave up that idea as it would have taken weeks. Th timber was in good condition so i lifted each piece and turned them over and re nailed.
Took a couple of days but saved $2000 and it came up like new once it was oiled.

And when its off you can attack the edges a lot easier.
If I didn't already have one I'd buy a cheap planer rather than buzz away all day with a sander.
