I am looking at having a deck built at ground level, approximately 50 sq m. I'm interested in hearing what other people have paid to have decks built, to check that I'm getting a reasonable quote. Thanks!

Depends what you use. Kwila 140x19 probably around $13-$14k.

Around $200 per sm, using premium decking.

We built one deck at ground level and put in foundation posts, then bearers, then joists, then decking. The deck is very solid and doesn't bounce at all. Some will say you don't need bearers at ground level, but if you can afford them, use them. The cost for being built by a contractor would depend on quotes.

I just spent about about $2200 in total for a 15m2 deck at basically ground level (although a wee bit of digging out at one end). That was materials AND labour. I'd say the job isn't FANTASTIC but it's adequate (it's only for a sleepout). I used pine. It doesn't bounce although the foundation posts, bearers and joists are at the very maximum distances. ! The pine also wasn't fab grade but I've oiled it to ensure maximum preservation. As others have said, you really get what you pay for and it's sometimes difficult to know when you're getting an adequate/decent/top-knotch job without being ripped off in some shape or form! To be honest I'd get 3 quotes at least. And make sure the one you choose has a few decent reviews behind their name.
