Thornless Blackberries and Pruning.

I know its not the right time now. But thinking ahead.

How does one prune and what do you cut out when pruning blackberries. We have large vines that have never been pruned and have noticed there are a few dead runners in it.
Is it a case of just cutting the lot back! or do you have to be more select!

Cut out the dead ones and also the ones that have fruited.

The new wood is next years fruit. Cut out all the old canes at the base and tie in all the new canes.simple

The easiest way is to put some coloured tape around the base of the new canes so you know which is new growth and at the end of the season when the leaves have dropped, cut out all the old canes leaving the new marked ones. You only need to keep 3 or 4 good strong canes per plant for a good crop of berries.
