hmmm. thanks budgel. ive got some smooth surface sealer in the shed already, i'll look at that in the morning. thanks for the suggestion!

The plastic that these are made of is designed not to let anything stick so it probably wont work. Smooth surface sealer uses a solvent to etch into the surface and this may work but will then make the surface coating less flexible so if you want it fleixible still youre out of luck.it will move but will probably also crack if moved a bit.if its stationary .all good. You could always use a plastic wrap. Good luck

Ahhhh.I see. Thanks karrenna.Once in place they wont be moving.Might risk the smooth surface sealer & see how it gets on.Thanks!

100% acrylic will stick to plastic not all acrylics are 100% so just make sure whatever brand you get is 100% acrylic resin
It is worth noting that ??PVC Gutters and Downpipes do not need an etch primer before overcoating with an exterior acrylic finish. In fact any coating rich in solvents may cause permanent damage to PVC by making it brittle. PVC may be covered in form oils that will require removing with Resene Roof Wash and Paint Cleaner and water. When painting acrylics directly onto PVC, adhesion can be improved slightly by sanding with P220 sandpaper. Acrylics also take about a week to develop full adhesion over PVC. Don??

Thanks fordkiwi27 - was leaning to the smooth sealer approach since ive already got some anyway & done what your talking about before, but on a different surface.
Cheers xx

I am surprised fordkiwi specs from resene would not differ from any other paint company the barrels are made from Material Plastic - Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
Specs from resene for best adhesion are "UPVC, may be directly overcoated with good quality adhesion promoted waterborne finishes. These thermoplastic materials are sensitive to solvents and may also soften under the influence of heat. Dark colours should not be used to avoid warping."
Where smooth surface sealer comes with the warning
"Might not adhere to all plastics. A test patch is recommended."
No such warning is given in other specs and have been told by paint chemist that 100% acrylic resin is best (this was a couple of years ago)

could try a patch of lumbersider or similar. but i would etch it. i know it would stick! i dont think those barrels are as thin as guttering so it wont break down with a meth based etch

you would probably be better to paint first with an undercoat that you use on iron or metal,

etch primer then any acrylic or scuff it up really well and use acrylic dont use enamel as it does not have the elastisity of acrylics and will crack

beat me to it! I used to work for a paint company and the best way to cover up the markings on these was etch primer, basically the only thing that will adhere to them

Thanks for all the advice. the projects still in the planning phase so all this is very useful! Thanks heaps!

If you were painting a 70 year old weather board house would you use Resene semi-gloss or Resene low-sheen! If you had accepted a quote for semi-gloss and then found the painter had used low-sheen would you question this! Maybe there is a good reason that they changed the product after doing the quote or maybe it makes no difference to the finished result.

RESULTS: I did a trial using 3 different approaches & waited 2 weeks -
1)Straight acrylic 2 coats - paint slid straight off as soon as touched.
2) Grip Lock Primer + 1 acrylic coat - slid straight off easy again.
3) Resene Smooth Surface Sealer + 1 acrylic = BINGO, stuck like glue!Has been moved around a bit & no cracking yet.Can give it a firm rub & nothings coming off it.
Thanks for all the advice, weve got a clear winner!
