Electrical fuse ---thoughts

firob, Dec 8, 9:04pm
We have just had our stove upgraded & the new F & P model installed. Left the switchboard fuse on the bench so the electrician would see it to put back into switchboard after install. But oh no, original fuse still on the bench when we got home & a 10amp fuse in the switchboard. Any comments please !.Yes we soon found out when we went to cook tea !

Freestanding all electric!

maybe the sparky checked your cable run and size of cable and decided a 10 amp current was all it was safely capable of. Did the sparky put another porcelain fuse in or are these plug in mcb's!

well at least you have a spare fuse now aye .

!, just one element ( 3000w ) pulls in excess of 10 amp, ovens commonly drag down 20, if the cabling was insufficient to run the stove the sparky should not have wired it in

what size/rate was the original fuse you left out for him

Fuse moved over for testing because they couldnt see your oven fuse, spare fuse sitting on switchboard used! Or did they put a new 10a mcb in!

Quite possible. One electrician we had came round to wire up a spa, I told him it drew 24A max and he put in a 32A fuse (correctly) and a 10A switch further down the cable.Three days later the 10A switch exploded across the room, rather interestingly.Fortunately we were in the room at the time and could put the fire out immediately.Electricians make mistakes.

It is a common mistake that a lot of sparkies make. I have also seen lots fit all sorts of things but particularly heat pumps and wire them onto light switches instead of isolators. Not to bad if you use PDL because their switches are at least rated to 20A but if they then switch to HPM theirs are only 10A and they burn out very quickly. And that's not even mentioning that a light switch is not an isolator.

The original fuse left out for the F & P new freestanding all electric stove, for the installer to use , was a 30amp, which had been on the switchboard when we had the ceramic top stove. Now we receive account for the install for over $300.00 from the installer who are owned by the appliance chain we got the stove from. Yes t_naki we found the 10amp didnt last long enough to even salt the spuds ! at first use.

When you say you left a fuse out was it a fuse or a circuit breaker!

Getting the facts here is a bit like pulling teeth.

I suppose we should be grateful that OP didn't refer to it as a 'wire' - seen that before.
"The wire on my fuseboard blew out".
Either way, a sparky fitting something rated at 10 amps to supply a hob or stove should have his practicing license suspended. That's just gross incompetence or negligence.

A Fuse.

Isn't it the rules somewhere that when an old stove with internal fuses is replaced the circuit protection must be upgraded to a circuit breaker! If not in the rules it is in the manufacturers installation instructions and must be followed (I think)

elect70, Dec 10, 3:28pm
^^^ your rightI aways do it & putplug & socket on if its free standing , maybe thats where the $300cost was .

t_naki, Dec 11, 5:42am
If it is a rewirable fuse then he cannot fit it and would have to fit a circuit breaker. Did he fit a base with a plug in breaker, he may have only had that one and thought that the 10A would do until he could get back with the correctly rated one.

Sounds like he might have just forgot to get back
