Looks like a leucanthemum to me. Comes in pink, white, lemon. On a bush. Hmmm, you said tall! Can we see a photo of the pant and the height of it please!
It is salsify. A vegetable, also known as vegetable oyster, a bit like an earthy tasting, skinny parsnip! Definitely an aquired taste. Flowers are gorgeous though - and it will seed. Goes to seed a bit like a dandelion.

Agree with piquant - we have always grown Salsify for its flowers - but not for its value as a vegetable!
