Carport, building consent ?

Hi, if putting up a moveable carport, do you need consent? To explain, just putting it up for over winter for washing and protect bikes, trailer etc (Will be anchored to the ground, no concrete), and hoping to move it in about 2 years when lots of other stuff has been done around yard. tia

Usually not - no consent needed if less than 20m2 area, on ground level, attached to an existing building/garage. and not closed in on 4 sides.
For a detached "shed" - the size limit is 10m2.

You should still check with your local council.

For a freestanding carport it's 15m2

It "was" 15m2 - but superseded in Nov 2013.

Edit. I suggested the OP should talk to council, but in retrospect as it's temporary, even if outside the Building Act guidelines (so long as not outrageously so) and Council finds out, first response from them would probably be to ask to take it down - which would be no big deal.
OTOH, you might strike some zealot who'd want to prosecute, and ask for the death penalty if it were applicable.

its 29.7 at the moment. We could make it smaller as wanting it free standing, next to a shed which is 9m2. Still waiting to hear from council, just wanting to get going already.

Our council has the building code online.

What these fellahs say is about right. you are allowed one with no permit.
