Hi all, I was wondering if I could get some advice. I've got plants growing in some guttering that has been placed between two pieces of roof - the roof from the main house (sloped) and from the carport (flat). it looks something like this: \__ with the gutter in the middle there. There's only about 40mm gap, so not enough room to fit my hand or any tool (I tried a pry bar on the weekend and got nowhere!). I can't think or how to clean out the gutter, let alone how to get the cabbage tree and other miscellany with all their roots etc out! Any advice appreciated :)

high pressure hose and small brush (with long handle) maybe?

Hmmm. that might work. Scared to fork out for the hose if its no good though!

no, I meant normal water hose on full blast.

True. it might be a bit too compacted for that. Worth a shot though!

Get up on the roof, only way to do it properly.

Hi Debbie I worked as a professional spouting cleaner in ChCh for many years and I've seen it all. When you can see plants such as small trees growing from your spouting it pretty much means the worst case scenario because that spouting has been blocked for so long it has probably started rusting no matter how galvanised or powder coated it is. What this usually means is the home owner will have to replace their spouting. Anyway if you want a DIY solution to clean it then here's what you do. It sounds like you need to get up onto your flat carport roof. Do this and pull the ladder up after you. Then use the ladder to gain extra height to access the problem area. Don't take a bucket if you are not used to ladders, just throw everything down on the ground and pick it up afterwards. Your carport roof will be sloping so do not put your ladder up at a big angle or it might slide out from underneath you. Either get someone to put both their feet at the bottom of the ladder to stop it from sliding, and keep that area of the roof dry, i.e. so dont throw wet stuff onto the base of the ladder making it more slippery, otherwise keep the angle of the ladder as close to 75 degrees instead of the recommended 60 degrees making sure you lean in at all times, because if you lean outwards the ladder might topple over backwards. If you a desperate you can lay a piece of wood such as a 4 X 2 horizontally across a couple of nail heads on the low angle roof and put the ladder against them to give it more support at the base to stop it from sliding out from underneath you. If you are used to ladders and heights some of this stuff is pretty straightforward, so go for it if you feel confident. Here's another tip from a pro; make sure you put your ladder up to the top of every downpipe on your house and garage and make sure it is not blocked at the top from an overgrowth of muck, then once you have got rid of all that walk around the base of your downpipes, lifting them up slightly to ensure they are not blocked at the bottom of the pipes onto the grating. This is a common occurrence.

Once on the carport the problem will be at your feet. It sounds like both house and carport roofing iron overhang the same piece of gutter. Unless the unwanted plants can be broken up you may need to trim the carport iron to give more gap.

Yup, thats the problem exactly. the gutter is between the two lots of roofing iron. I've been up on the roof and my hands (and tools) are too big to get a decent grip on anything. I didn't get a chance to go up there on the weekend, but if a high pressure hose can loosen some of the muck/roots then I *might* be able to get some of it out. Otherwise I think your suggestion of trimming the carport iron, or even removing the gutter from below might be the only way to go :/

What if you sprayed some weed killer into the gutter? It won't happen overnight . but it will happen. so the story goes:) That might make it easier for the power hose to whoosh it into a no-problem zone.
