bought a feijoa-'unique' on Friday; went to plant up today- there were no roots , just a stem, leaves are curling a little , will this survive, should it have a root system- was bought at well known retail out let not a road side stall

Doubt it will survive plants need roots. Take it back and do not let them tell you it is your mistake. The plant must have been doubtful when you got it for it to separate so easily from its roots.

Take it back, it should have roots.
I would not buy unique, there are better fruiting feijoas than unique.
