Cleaning Rust off my Barbeque

freesia, Oct 5, 9:15am
Despite giving the hot plate on my barby a good scrub and cleanup last autumn, I uncovered it today to find it all covered in orange stuff I assume is rust. How do I get rid of it?

wire brush and burn it off

And always leave a coating of vege oil on hot plate when cleaned up for winter.

Actually it pays to do this even if its only going to be a fortnight between uses

I only ever wipe off with some newspaper when I finish with it. Heat up and give a scrape and wipe with oil and newspaper when I use it next time. Never goes rusty.

Thanks all.

The rust is a healthy source of iron so don't worry about it getting on your food. Try getting it off using coca cola and a wire brush, or if you have access to phosphoric acid use that, and gloves.

Noooo!. wire brushes should be banned:

Use a rust cleaner or elbow grease and a standard scrubbing brush.

Once clean, coat with a layer of fat (not oil) and it keeps it from rusting again.
Just give a bit of a wash with soapy water, then grease again before cooking. Same as you do with cast iron frypans.
