There is a wide range of spraypaints available in a can. One primer and two topcoats should do it.

Might need sealing. The stains on these are inclined to permeate several layers - test a bit first and leave for at least 24 hours (days if poss) to see.
It should come up well, but yes, I'd be spraying!

My friend has started dabbling with white chalk paint (I think that's what it's called) and some of the furniture she has done looks really stunning

Annie Sloan chalk paint would give this a great matt finish look.
