stoked got all the H30 firebricks outta one fireplace in excellent condition and they make the exact base measurements i needed (must be fate!) lol and enough bricks to do the body, all for free.gotta love recycling.now just gotta pay for the sleepers for the base and the mix and a few other essentials.

purplegoanna, Oct 17, 12:42am
going to pick up my base on thrusday, all my bricks are scraped, cleaned and water blasted, next step buying the fire blanket.

honzee, Oct 17, 1:22am
Do you think you could smoke fish in one of these pizza ovens! I want a pizza oven & a smoke-house - Mr Honzee is being mean and saying I can only have 1. :(

Hey, I will be listing full kits soon. complete base, Precast refractory dome, crematic blanket, chicken wire and enough render for first coat. then you let your imagination go wild for how you want your finished oven to look.
Im just working on instructions to go with the kits. this it why i have not listed them yet.
Price will be about 2k. am happy to upgrade to silica sand and white cement if you want to colour your final render coat. or supply traditional lime putty for render. you could even go adobe finish if you want to muddy with the kids : )

purplegoanna, Oct 23, 12:04am
i was going to go cow poo/straw/clay for my render but hubby forbode it! apparantly ive pushed my limit as to how much 'hippyness' ive brought onto the property & how much he can cope with! lol.so ill go bricks, mortar, blanket, wire, tinfoil, coloured cement.(p.s anyone whos keen ullrich aluminium/manukau sell a heavy grade tinfoil much thicker than crap you buy from the supermarket, if anyone wants any i can price its, get it and roll it for postage :)

Just curious folks, have you all looked at council regs for these ovens!I was under the impression that at least where I live (Welly) where we are under a permanent year round fire ban that anything except a BBQ needs a permit, everyting including all braziers, hangi, ovens etc.Should anything ever be a problem and there is a fire, would completely void insurance policies etc!

howgoodisit, Oct 23, 2:30am
How is that hippy!
Thats a traditional render. unless everyone in the 1700/1800's were hippys. im sure hippys were not even invented yet : )

Just make sure you have good insulation before and organic material renders go on, if they get to hot they can start smoking and even catch fire.

howgoodisit, Oct 23, 2:33am
They are in the BBQ range. no flames or sparks come out a well designed oven so risk of fire is zero.

purplegoanna, Oct 23, 4:18am
cos it ads to the chickens, birds, rabbits, gardens, compost, worm farms and every thing else ive talked him into! lol.added was all he could see was 2 dogs getting covered in crap'n'clay! lol

howgoodisit, Oct 23, 11:00pm
Looks like you are best off getting him 2 piglets for xmas! :P
That will get him used to the mud once he builds a bathing pond for them :P

purplegoanna, Oct 24, 12:49am
ive just tried and failed at 2 orphan lambs so piglets wont even get a listen!.just spent all of this morning laying my firebricks onto my slab and hopefully will get the 1st layer of wall bricks down.

howgoodisit, Oct 24, 4:48am
Nice, throw up some photos of your progress.
I spent the arvo collecting & cutting stones for my entrance arch. looks like the weather is going to pack in for the rest of the week : (

purplegoanna, Oct 24, 5:13am
will load them later, quite proud of myself cut my bricks in perfect halves with a brick chisel & hammer, even hubbys impressed but made a cockup by getting sunburnt doing the first 2 layer so i decided to do the arch inside (i can connect it up at the next stage) but theres no sun in the factory so my brick glue is gonna take longer to set.might turn the heater on it tomorrow to speed it up, put a layer of tinfoil under my firebricks, didnt need to but hey i figure it all helps.

purplegoanna, Oct 25, 5:50am
let me know if you can see them via my fb linkhttp://www.facebook.com/media/set/!set=a.2532436996270.141886.1413878226&type=1&l=5576d83f2a spent the day elocating arch to outside and filling outter edge holes with chips and concrete.

howgoodisit, Oct 26, 11:31pm
You dont want to make cements or concrete set fast, i always cover my work with a tarp to make it set slower, even indoors. you get more strength the slower it sets. concrete is like cheese. gets stronger with age but speeding up the aging process will ruin it.

Looking good, mind if i call you superwoman!
Added you as friend on FB, keen to keep up to date with your project. keep up the good work!

purplegoanna, Oct 27, 12:14am
yip no worrys.i the kiwi version of superwoman! lol mum was a BRILLIANT solo mum who brought me and my brother to attempt anything & everything, i can use most machinery, + drive forkhoists and tractors etc.if a man can do it ill have a damn good try at attempting it myself (except for peeing whilst standing up! lol)

howgoodisit, Oct 28, 1:37am

Hey people, i have just added a write up about why not to build a earth oven.
It is in the last step of the instructable link above "Thermal properties of common masonry materials".
It is worth a read if you have thought about building an earth oven.

purplegoanna, Oct 28, 8:35pm
i have the one answer for why not! with fuel, oil and power crisis's upon us in the future people need to learn how to get back to the basics.the chch earthquake (no offence) was a prime example of how mankind relys on flicking the switch and turning the tap far too much. if i had my way id flick the switch and turn of the tap on the entire country for a week so everybody gets to understand how theyve lost the old ways and take the new ways of life far to easily!

howgoodisit, Oct 28, 9:49pm
Hahaha, i think you read my post wrong.
I did not mean "why not build a earth oven"!
I meant "why NOT to build an earth oven"!.as in dont build one.

Just do things properly the first time, adobe is not a good material to use for a firing chamber. read my write up.

purplegoanna, Oct 31, 11:26pm
rain! we've got sun and wind and im trying my best not to get sunburnt.im having a dilema.upto third layer height of bricks.i was going to fill it with sand and then put the bricks on but im fanatic about neatness and i like to be able to smooth the refract glue out on the inside seam.plopping it down on sand wont give that option, im wondering if i do 2 bricks a day/night (1 each side) and support it from the inside with wood/bricks then can i build up that way, i support and glue one day then next day fill them with mortar and move onto the next 2 for the next day! soundsz long and tedious but sorta fits in cause i can only do so much fitting in with work & other stuff.
