Uses for Log Fire Ash

hazelthecat, Jun 25, 8:01pm
I burn untreated macrocarpa in my log fire. Will spreading the ash lightly on my garden and lawn do any harm (or good)?

gilligee, Jun 25, 8:03pm
I sprinkle ours round each rose and put the rest in the compost.

I put mine in the compost. Spreading under plants is fine, so long as it's not under an acid loving plant. Ash is alkaline.
And I had the impression that lawn grass prefers it slightly acid too, but please double check this.

High in potash, good for any number of ornamentals and even your lawn . but no treated wood burnt in there?

When you buy It's called potash and is expensive.
An essential ingredient and excellent for fruit in particular.
Fruit trees and vines, the strawberry patch, the vege patch, all will benefit.
Sadly I have to get mine from a friend with a fireplace, not having one of my own.

Go easy when putting it around plants. I killed a young olive by being too liberal with it.

I spread over the garden and around trees but it is not as strong as brought stuff

Thanks all. I will continue spreading but more lightly on the lawn.

Make soap out of it

And use it to clean the glass of your log fire. works a treat!
