Water Hammer in pipes

pedro6000, Dec 8, 7:20am
Hi
Our cold water pipes have started making loud clunking noises when you turn certain taps off. But they also do it sometimes when no one is even using the taps. Is there anything we can do to try to fix this, or do I have to call a plumber?
Thanks

I would call my plumber but people do fix this themselves, it's a fairly common problem.

It is probably a damaged washer in one of your taps.

one big thing is what type taps do you have . ones that you turn around or handle that lift up and down?

Both types of tap, but the one producing the hammer is a lift up mixer type

Pipes may not be fastened (cleated) under house, or touching each other in walls. It happened to me when the water inlet to house increased due to tap opened up really wide after replacement. Try an locate where the sound is and have a look yourself first. It may be an easy fix. Plumbers are a clever dudes + (eses), so if you are not up to crawling under house they can help.

Yes and it can be ceramic faucets on high mains pressure Ive had that too.

pipes need re nailing or clamping as the brackets come loose over time

Thanks. We drained the pipes as per the video suggested. This produced an immediate improvement, almost no hammer, but it's back today so time to call a plumber.

I am also having trouble with pipes banging after having a new pump installed, (On tank water) The pump is not getting up to pressure after water being used, worse when toilets are flushed, each time pump comes back on pipes bang, this can go on for 10 or more times until pump stops again. Have rung plumber several times, still waiting for him to come, very frustrating, any ideas, I believe it must have a air lock. would love to be able to fix it if anyone can help please

stop hammer time

I have seen anywhere along the pipe causing the trouble a short piece of pipe 600mm inserted & plugged off at the end
This creates a buffer of air & stops water hammer

Common problem. Try turning it off slowly. A normal tap shuts down the flow progressively so allowing the pressure in the pipe to equalise. The lift up can stop the flow almost instantly and as a result the pipes bang about trying to absorb the shock.
