Where to buy bamboo

jonners2013, Nov 8, 2:20pm
my searching skills are failing me and i can't find anything useful.

does anyone know of any nurseries with a good range of bamboo? in/around ChCh would be ideal, but will order via phone/internet if need be.

Buy? Usually there are loads of people offering the stuff free. try Freecycle, husband gets some from people who clear their sections.

There are many varieties, not all run and invade, some are slow growing clumping types, from very small to giant that do no damage at all, even long term.

some bamboos have 'grooves', that alternate between the nodes, those are the running kind.

the other bamboos that have smooth stems are the clumping sort and don't send long runners.

I'm keen a tall bamboo with large, black stems and bright green leaves. It looks very cool, I just haven't been able to find it locally. Am not aware of its officially name.

I'll speak to hose bamboo specialists and see if they have any suggestions. No luck with Oderings unfortunately.

It's a shame that so many people have the misguided belief that all bamboo is invasive because it's not true at all. The majority of the cultivated varieties are clumping, not surprisingly.

Try Textured Plants. They were my regular suppliers for anything unusual and can source stock.

I don't know why anyone would want to plant bamboo.
It spreads and takes over large erea's of land; and can be difficult to eradicate. I would rather watch paint dry than ever have around my place.

ahhh yes good idea. I always forget about those guys. I'll pop out today and have a look, thanks.

i've also got plenty of drying paint mate, you're welcome to pop over and keep an eye on it.

Bamboo
A non-invasive clumping variety is a good option for a garden screen, such as Bambusa multiplex ???Alphonse Karr??

We purchased Fairy Bamboo from both the local garden centre and Mitre 10

Bamboo also strikes by cuttings. Time in aussie using bamboo stakes for tomatoes and peas and they took off!
Ghost bamboo and sacred black is a fav
