Liquid nails has worked for me many times although you may need to use and few screws initially till the glue goes off,another suggestion is run some furring channel on the the block wall @ .600 centres

Yep you are right but I am doing this for an elderly Lady on a low budget. I know a lot of gib is glued to block walls.I was just wondering what others are using

You aren't gluing to a painted block wall,you are gluing it to the paint so you have to scrape the paint off where the glue blobs go. A batten system is best as you will glue to the timber plus you will create an air space. I am suspicious of block walls and moisture coming from either the outside or vertically out of the ground. You should give this moisture question some thought. Best of luck.

Blobs of Silicone Adhesive at 100mm centres, but only if block wall is not exposed to moisture on the other face.
