Refit bathroom

freebutterflies, Oct 21, 8:49am
I have been quoted 10 grand to take out my old bath and replace it with a shower and new vanity. My whole bathroom is only 2 x 2 metres. My cottage is only 60 square M. I don't need anything flash but this amount seems rather extreme to me. What do you think?

That could be relatively cheap depending on the work required. Quotes in Auckland to remove all fixtures, wall and floor linings, then replace to new standards and fit owner supplied fixtures cost us $19,000. That bathroom is 2x3m.

Our small bathroom cost about 10k, included all fittings, plaster and paint plus some floor replacement. We were pleased with end result.

Would it be cheaper to turn it into a wet room? that's the other alternative . ( thanks for the input )

Considerably more expensive was what I was told when I asked the same thing for our bathroom.

$10k is pretty reasonable. I usually tell my clients to budget $15k for an average quality bathroom reno.

Is that price including the shower and the vanity? We didn't go low end, but not super high end either - from my plumber's quote so about 70% of retail:
shower $830, vanity $500 waste x 2 $20 shower rose adaptor $50 shower rail and shower $280 - so ther's $1200 in materials. You'll probably need an electrician too - if you want a power point - that's an upgrade to a RCD circuit. Small baths are difficult to work in - the plumbe doesn't fit in our 2 x 3 m bathroom at the same time as the builder - so its a very messy job - the small size makes is more so. Once we combined the bathroom gut and replace with the ktichen gut and replace the combined costs where about 20% less than the quotes for the individual rooms - there is that much mucking around.

Are you painting yourself - you can save yourself some money there- but you will probably need some new gib and that needs a plasterer as well.

Yes, that is the finished price. Including all materials and painted, also new extractor fan installed. Maybe it is a good price.? Thanks for all the help.

My bathroom cost $20290, that was a total refurbish, new wooden floors and the polying of them, a wall removed, new bath and toilet and a shower installed, bathroom did not have a shower at all, new wall hung vanity, vanity was made by a cabinet maker, power points, heated rails, extractor fan, Full wall tiling. That was absolutely everything, that includes the sealant used as well!
The upstairs one was less Just on $18000, both of these rooms were done to a very high spec, but I could have cut costs a bit by not getting luxury items.
Bathrooms are expensive if you have to get someone to do most of the work.
I kept a spreadsheet of every $ spent, I could have probably had them done for around the $15000 mark, but I wanted certain things, oversize shower, rainhead etc.
Good luck with the reno's

Contact Drew & Jonathan on TV - they do a whole refit for $US10,000.!
Pay their fares and lodging in NZ and it would still be cheaper!
Yes, I am joking, but only because we are being sucked dry.

Yep, same here, complete new bathroom refit, $10,000. Best ever money spent, love it. Its not easy to cut costs, unless you go for cheapo vanity, shower etc. I would really advise getting reasonably good quality shower unit, bath vanity etc, after all its going to be there a long time before you do again! Super expensive ones not required, but definitely good quality and brand.
Check with the crew that they haven't priced it on el cheapo!
I didn't appreciate how much work was required to move pipes etc to accommodate the new bits. Cutting into walls, digging out bits of concrete floor etc.
Also, ask if this includes electrical services , gib stopper etc.
