Help needed with keeping cut ivy from wilting

chriisyr28, Nov 27, 6:13am
I am making centrepieces for wedding tables this Saturday. The ivy "circles" to go around vases will be lightly sprayed with silver paint. I had a practise run a few months ago and they stayed looking fresh for 3 or 4 days. However, I made another one today and it wilted within hours. Could this be because of the new softer growth! Any suggestions for keeping it looking fresh longer would be appreciated.

Sink the ivy in water overnight, leaves, stems and all. One of the secrets an 'old florist' taught me.

Thanks stevee. Just wondering how long it would take to dry before I can spray it.

Dry it off with paper towels and give it an hour with just the bottom of the stems in water to keep the moisture up. If you tape the bottoms with florist tape or even brown packing tape when you make the circles, that will also help the ivy stay turgid and strong.

Also try to pick older growth, not the tender young paler green leaves.

Thanks for your replies. I will pick it tomorrow and soak it in the bath.

This is the most important information. Don't pick this years growth until it has matured.
