I have bought sizzler and bird eye hot . The lady at the garden store said they were best grown in pots . Any advice would be great as I'm a gardening novice :)

Mine grow fine in the garden. Just put them in full sun, water and support with a stake and that's it.

I grow mine in pots so I can sit them in a nice warm sunny spot up against the Nth wall of the house. But I'm in Stratford, so they need a bit of help. Warmer climate / longer growing season would make it easy. If you use pots, make sure you keep up the watering and give them some fertiliser as they grow.
But if you have a nice sunny spot in the garden they should do fine there too.
They aren't hard to grow as long as you give them the right conditions.

we grew LOTS a few years back. the trick is to just water them and other than that,,,just ignore them, they seemed to like neglect

catlover7, in our climate, I grow mine in a green house & they thrive.(apart from damned whitefly etc) I usually get enough to dry & flake for seasoning as well as making sweet chilli sauce, from one plant. Keep the water up to them if they are in pots & under the eaves. They like heat/warm. Good luck.

Last season we grew both in the garden - full sun. We were inundated with chilles so we froze them sand are still getting through them. They don't need a lot of care - just keep watering

Oh fantastic thanks heaps :) do you normally get a few chillies in a plant ?

When I've grown mine I get a lot of chillies per plant, definitely more than a few per plant. And as above posters have said you can freeze them too so can use them all year round.

Pots? Why? If you haven't any garden space, sure, other wise plant them out. More room = bigger plants.

No idea why they just said . Can anyone recommend a good type to grow ?

I've always had a good run the local "Wildfire" variety that's sold in most garden centres. Seems to grow well in the NZ climate and gives a heap of tasty medium size chillies.
Should end up with a plant a couple of feet tall, with dozens of fruit.
My climate seems a little cold for the Habanero type, they grow, but struggle to ripen before the weather cools off.

I have grown lots and like the others. just water. My jalapeno ones grew so well and into winter and gave a lot of chillies but I did not eat any.Gave some away and the rest are frozen for whoever wants them. Btw its hard to find the birds eye one in garden centers. maybe my bad luck.

Mine only grow in the glasshouse (Dunedin). And the variety that does best is the Wildfire Hybrid.

Water and patience. Once the weather warms up they will be booming.
I grew a cayenne(?) in a pot but I reckon they would be bigger and better in the ground.

one tip is to make sure you prune off any wilted chillies or ones that look a bit diseased. it helps the plant grow more(and more and more and more)
