Advice on what to plant please

beanies, Jan 23, 8:27pm
We have almost finished earthquake repairs and are now looking at replanting our gardens that got destroyed in the repair. We have a garden down the side of the house and have no idea what plants to put there. We are thinking some sore of shrub that doesn't grow much above 1 meter tall. We just want to soften the look of the solid 6 foot fence. The area doesn't get much sun in the winter due to the neighbours tall camellias on the other side of the fence. We would like something evergreen and low maintenance as its basically just a walkway from back door to washing line.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

There are some small camellias that might suit, or some smaller or trim-able natives?

Camellias are out as there are massive on the other side of the fence and its enough of a problem picking all the flowers from them when they drop and pruning them back as they try to stretch their way over our side of the fence.

Hydrangeas - ours have done well along the side of our house - that side of the house doesn't get a lot of sun and they have grown a lot in 6 months.

Azaleas will tolerate shade and cold and will suit the acid conditions created by Camellias.

2nd the azaleas. Those smaller leaved camellias do not present the same issues as the large ones. Have a wee look at the newer varieties such as Cinnamon Cindy as it can have a beautiful scent. Also michelia might be worth a look.
