Fairly sure not a puka, the flowers are under the leaves and the photo is upside down to show the seed capsule, which is eucalypt, syncarpia even

I'm almost certain not a native. Tree is single trunk to 12 feet then branching and five finger leaf display with abundant white flowers under the five leaf array.

By your description it could be a scheflerra, or umbrella plant. Bit hard to tell from that photo

Are the flowers scented? It could be one of the pseudopanax, maybe. Can you get a picture of the tree?

I still think it could be a pittosporum. It has the wavy leaves and flowers similar to pittosporum undulatum, and pittosporum have strange and very variable seed pods.

Any more guesses? Not lancewood leaves arranged in 5 and flowers beneath the leaves, photo is upside down to show seed capsule. Thanks for interest, we can't see it in any tree books and me and mother have lots tree books.
