That exists on the roadsides in the country. It has orange flowers in summer, a bulb. It seems to expand its presence quite rapidly. I'd like some for my garden, shouldn't take much looking after.

Do you mean Crocosmia (Montbretia)? It's very pretty, but very invasive. If you ever want to get rid of it you have to dig down deep!
for the Auckland region Montbretia (crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) is a surveillance pest plant "banned from sale, propagation, distribution and exhibition."
