Just stripped the wall papper in the hall.looks like it has taken the top layer off the old gib aswell. what to do next? Fill any imperfections and then re wall papper . or best to seal the wall with something first.

Use a thicker than normal wall paper - embossed one?

Seal, patch with something like Plus4, and sand.

I have plus 4.should I seal the walls with something before laying new wall papper?

If the gib looks old and yellowish, I would seal it before papering, else just sizing the walls with paper glue may do.

Yes to all above, plaster the gib and size walls. Did you wet the paper before removal, too late now, of course, but it may have helped prevent damage.

I have heard it said that it is easier and more viable just to bite the bullet and put up new gib, at least you know you will get a good finish after all your hard work.
