Lemon Verbena?

ptrex, Nov 21, 8:23am
I have tried to find lemon verbena in the garden centres',to no avail.I googled the herb suppliers and it is in their catalogues but do not seem to supply it. I live in Tauranga if anyone can help. Thanks.

I cant get rid of it in my garden ,do you want me to send you some!

That sounds more like Lemon Balm, bugin, rather than Lemon Verbena. ptrex, have you tried looking for Aloysia triphylla (as it is now known) - you should be able to get it at good garden centres.

Piquant, yes I have and have been in the order books at the leading garden centres' and absolutely no joy. Any other suggestions! and thanks.

I have tried to grow this from cuttings several times without success but I do have a large and thriving plant in my garden . Perhaps I could post you a cutting !

piquant, Nov 22, 6:12pm
You need to take cuttings in spring, poppysinger2, just as the leaves are breaking. Hope you have more success now!

I have a very robust lemon balm plant too, can you use it for anything!

www.findaplant.co.nz and plantfinder.co.nz may be a help, if theya re still going. I used them several years ago to find a rose.

I have bought it a number of times from local garden centres, or you could try Mitre 10. It's often in the perennial plant section as opposed to being a larger shrub. It is frost tender & I usually lose it every year as I live in Southland.

ralta, Nov 23, 6:47am
It's usually sold with the herbs at garden centres but they don't always have it as they only seem to get a few in at a time. The lost time I bought one (at Palmers) I had to request it specially (went on waiting list) & they rang me next time they had some come in.

lemming2, Nov 23, 10:42am
Because it's a shrub it tends to come and go at the garden centres. You could order, or just wait - Autumn is often a good time.

kaliyuga, Nov 24, 9:45am
when I have found it here at mitre 10 or another local garden centre it was summer so perhaps you need to wait a bit or as ralta said go on a waiting list. Thanks for the tip about timing cuttings piquant, have tried to do some but failed. Never let them dry out, I have killed two this way even in big pots. will plant it in the ground next time I find one, its my favorite herbal tea freshly plucked and popped into the pot.

Because it is deciduous then you may find its not available at the moment but should be available mid summer

Absolutely best in the ground. Also, do not cut it back in spring till AFTER the leaf shoots appear. (Do your cuttings at this stage) It is also quite late to come away, I'm sure many people pull them out without realsing they are still alive!
