Urgent help please! Workers cut thru tree roots

It's pretty hard to kill a tree, yes it probably upset it a bit, but don't forget the roots go out in all directions, it should be fine, it will regrow them.

I would dump some soil mix into the trench once they've laid the cable and before they fill the holes, then make sure you keep the area well watered until autumn rain begins. The tree still has roots preserved on three sides, and it will also have some deeper taproots, so unless you get a real gale on the dug side, it's chances are pretty good. It doesn't look too old either, which is a plus.
Do organise what happens if it does fall with the contractor, and get it in writing!

It's awfully close to the road. Is it actually on your property! If it is, ring Council and tell them, also ring the contractors head office and tell them and follow up both calls with emails and pictures. Let them know its the contrctors fault and that they need to get a Tree Dr in to stabilise the tree.

cheers guys, appreciate it.

Tree is at least 9m tall & I'm guessing about 20 years old.

Thats our driveway in the photo, altho it is also close to the end of the cul-de-sac and is on council property.

cheers again fellas!

Just spoke to the head honcho of the workers & he said their contract has a 12 month maintenance period, so should anything go wrong they would take care of it.He said they had to trench by the tree instead of directional drilling as the trees roots were all tangled up with the power, water & gas mains.

Hoping if I can throw decent soil in the trench & water well we can avoid loosing the tree. Worse come to worse its on council land so they'd be paying to sort it should it need to come down (only downside is that it could come down on our house, fence, hedge etc & neighbours house.

Could be an interesting few months ahead!

thanks all for your comments

Can you get the contractors to tie the cut side with a braceing rope for 12 months while the roots regrow.

it should be fine. We had contractors working very close to a decent size rimu - they cut roots, teh tree wobbled & tilted while they did the job, but 2 yrs on its never looked so good! Plenty of good soil around damaged aea & water water water. Also we braced it for several months (we get wicked wind). It did look sad for a while tho.
