Bought this place two years ago, previous owner said they painted house, two years before we purchased it.Have found only one tin layer over dirt,no undercoat. We are having to strip everything right back.On one set of windows in the frame there is a orange to yellow colour in the timber. Its not paint. What could it be and what can we do about it!Any replies appreciated.

Its probably bog, In perfect you world would replace sash/window in the real world just paint over and hope they killed/stopped the rot wont last as long but will be cheaper.

A house that old would have several coats of paint, ours had many coats, probably lead paint for that age as well, we have had to scrape it right down to bare timber and start again, we did use an undercoat with a special additive to ensure tight bonding to the timber, however there are paints now which do not need undercoat, if you are to believe the manufacturer.
Maybe your house was prepared right down to bare timber, if you can only find one layer, be thankful the lead has been removed.
As for the window frame as timbo said, it may be filler of some sort.

Take photos of the orange to yellow stuff to the DIY shop and ask.I am stripping casement windows back and found multiple layers of paint and different colours. The windows shut differently now.

We are restoring a house of that age right now and the amount of bog and filler that we are putting into the old timber to fill all the cracks and imperfections is unbelievable. We are mainly doing it to stop the wind whistling through.
