Enamel paint, how to keep it from skinniing

rak1, Mar 11, 3:29pm
Does anybody have any bright ideas how to stop enamel paint/primes from skinning. By skinning I mean the thick skin that forms on the top of the paint in the tin. It seems to me that for every millilitre I use, I end up throwing out the same amount in thick skin off the top. It isint feasable to put it into a new tin each time I use some as the amount may only be 1/4 a cup or less. A huge waste of paint.

use acrylic enamel. enamel is dying a slow death.

I think I read some time ago that you put gladwrap over it and down the sides a bit then tape it. Sounded logical.

you must be leaving it a very longtime for that to be happening.

and did you spill heaps when you opened the turn or put your brush in. You also still had a skin, you just couldnt see it.

If the skin is forming while you use it, then in this weather it might be you need hot weather thinners added. But leaving a whisk in the paint and stirring it regularly stops the skin forming. Or decant a little into old jamjars to use and put the lid back on the tin. I use an old ladle for just that purpose!

It doesnt take long for a skin to form. best thing is when you open the tin check to see if a skin has formed and carefully cut around the edges of the tin and lift the skin out whole. When you have finishedpop the cut out skin back on the unused paint till next time.

That's the way.

When I wash the brush out in turps, I tip it all into the paint tin. The layer of turps stops a skin forming.

I bet it doesnt. The turps will mix with the enamel and simply thin the paint.

If you keep your used turps and stand it for a few weeks, the paint settles to the bottom and you get clean turps above that.(The clean turps can be poured off and used for your next paintbrush cleaning job.)So I can see that this method would prevent the skin forming.Might try it.

If you pour a thin layer of linseed oil into the top of the tin when you've finished it won't skin. Just mix it in before you next use it.
