Water restrictions

A friend told me that there is a blanket ban in Wellington on watering gardens, but the Welly council website and the interactive map on Stuff say careful hand held hose is still ok. I understand that there is a lack of water so I have been reducing use in the house where I can for a while, but should I let my veges that I grow to feed my family on a tight budget die! I water very conservatively down at the rootswith a hand held hose after the sun has gone and have done so for weeks. Thoughts!

Sounds like there will be a total ban within a few days.A pity for vege gardeners. Our vege garden suffered a lot after the earthquakes. We got an old plastic tank and used that with watering cans to do as much as we could. That did rely on the tank filling up with rain water though.

Go by what the council says, and keep watering those veges. A mulch around them will also slow the rate of transpiration.

Thatks, yes I do mulch :)

You could start using the waste water from your washing machine, dishwasher or when doing the dishes by hand. Also bath water if you have or use a bath.

Thanks Bounce, I am already thinking that might be the only way to keep everything going.

there's been a couple of good threads lately with tips for gathering water that you would otherwise waste, so you can water the garden during water restrictions.
My favourite is to keep a bowl in the kitchen sink. That way each time I wash my hands or rinse out a cup (for example) instead of the water going down the drain I have 'caught' it for watering my veges.

Will help to keep the bugs down too!

We are thinking of putting a pump on the bore in the garden if this keeps up. Never bothered to use it before but the time is coming I think.

Great idea, thank you :)

Yep, I'd even shower with a bucket. Anything counts!

My neighbour rang WCC too. She had booked leave ages ago to paint house but was worried about water restriction. They told her she couldn't use a water blaster (she hasn't got one anyway) but she could use hand held hose to wash it down, but not to be wasteful. She thinks now.maybe she should wait for rain.!

My neighbours use sprinklers in the front and back , wash there cars, go out and leave the sprinklers on to flood the lawn.but they no understand. I actually turned the tap off the other day I was so darned mad, the water was running down the footpath. They have been a lot better since then. I now figure they don't listen to our radio, watch our TV stations, or read the local papers. They use a satellite dish to get there TV stations.

Catch the water you boil your veges in too and let it cool then water your plants with that, they love it.

qingan, Mar 14, 3:54pm
Water at night and you wont be caught.

pauldw, Mar 14, 3:58pm
Rather stupid restriction by council. Water blaster usually uses less water at higher pressure than normal hosing.

quote from first line of acticle "Bathing, drinking and washing will be the only fun Wellingtonians can have with water come Saturday, when a region-wide ban on outdoor water use comes into force"

OUCH!
All of the councils affected by the water ban said yesterday that they would have staff out fixing leaks and monitoring non-compliance. They stressed people would be given ample opportunity to comply, but prosecution was an option for those who flagrantly ignored the ban, which could attract fines of up to $5000.

avkiwi, Mar 15, 1:46pm
Been doing that, and have a coupll of buckets in the shower and one in the kitchen for when washing veges/hands etc. PPlus still trying to be conservitive when doing those things.

We are on tank water. I was very surprised to see people watering their grass with the hose, when I was out driving
