If I turned my water off at the mains

over the weekend, I'm going away and have a small leak intap, do I need to turn off my water cylinder

Assuming the leak is at hot tap, would not be a good idea to turn off water. If cylinder drains (with no water going into it), there is a risk of it exploding. I'm not an expert on these things btw.Peter

The only issue with the HW cylinder is if it runs out of water with the power on then the element will burn out.So if it is a HW leak then also turn off the power to the cylinder.Turn it back on when the cylinder has filled up again

Wen I turned off my main for a few weeks, I couldn't get water out of my cylinder, ie hot water wasn't working either.I guess it senses no water coming in and disables it

The only risk is if the leak is from a hot tap but if you have any leak in any tap, should be fixed. So if the leak is from a cold tap then should be safe enough to turn off.

turn off the hot water at the switch n turn off the water
while yr away get someone to fix it

Yes to be safe turn the element off in H/W Cylinder. In some instances even a cold water leak can cause a vacuum reverse siphon response and drain out the hot water. Allowing the H/W element to burn out or even worse. Better safe than sorry

If you turn off the water at the road and you have a leak in the cold water system the hot water will drain back through the cold water piping because it is fed into the bottom of the cylinder, if the leak is in the hot water side then it will be ok because the hot water comes off the top of the cylinder and needs cold water coming in to push the hot water through, you can shut the cylinder off by closing the tap directly under the cylinder

Only if there's no non-return valve fitted.
