Extending a fireplace hearth

We have just had our chimney removed. A tiled hearth sat in front of it, which we left. We want to extend this back to where the chimney used to be.

We are installing a freestanding wood-burner in that space.

Is it possible to extend a hearth? Or is it best just to get rid of the remainder of it and start from scratch?

If there is concrete all the way back (which there probably is) then yes it can be extended. Just how much work is involved depends on the individual situation. Be sure to look at the manufacturers installation instructions to ensure the sizes are correct.

You can extend it easily with a timber frame with tile and slate underlay under and then tiles fixed to this.

Remember that what ever you do, the new burner will require fixing to the hearth somewhere, also check the clearances for the new burner too - the hearth may need extending at the front/sides.
