Badly cracked exterior window sill

In 100 year old villa. It has a lot of cracks (depth about 3-5mm) not so much splits but cracks in the wood. Can I fill prior to priming and painting or should the whole wide window sill be replaced.

Have a poke at it with a pointed knife or similar. If any softness is found, think about replacement, or removal of all soft stuff, then fill. If no softness use an epoxy filler on all the cracks. Builders bog type fillers arent really waterproof, so get an epoxy filler.

If theres no rot could you wrap it with thin metal aluminum or the like have seen that a few times on old villas done right it doesnt look to bad.

#1- Sand back to bare, smooth, wood all over. If old Rimu and there is natural splitting then best to drill deep stepped holes, (for screw thread and heads)insert and screw in a couple of long screws, (80/100mm) fill holes with a good filler, wait two days to properly harden, then well prime and paint as usual.

- fill the cracks with filler firstly before screwing in and tightening screws and before filler hardens.
