We have a Simpson Neptune at our bach. Wife has been complaining that 3 of the elements won't simmer low any more. Mr. Google says this is a common problem with Simpson cookers.

pamow69, Mar 7, 9:36pm
Not just Simpson. Also happens on Westinghouse and F&P It is usually the small blue Invenys or Robertshaw simmerstats that do that. Other brand stoves like Indesit, Parmco etc tend to use the more reliable Ego simmerstats which are more expensive to buy and are bigger.

Do this.

There is lots of second hand ones on Trademe available.

And reset the clock every time you wish to use the oven?

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 8, 2:21pm
Mine is a Westinghouse. Bottom of the range, cheapest on the floor.

I hate it, but it cooks. Sort of.

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 8, 2:47pm
Clock? CLOCK? What clock?

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 8, 5:13pm
No warming drawer, whole appliance heats up if you use the oven, top doesn't lift off for cleaning.

But hey - look at the price!

If only I wasn't such a very keen cook.

arabelle, Mar 8, 7:22pm
LUckily Im not a keen cook, so all those special features you mention dont worry me, it cooks, it works, and it didnt break the bank.
AS for OPs question, Many moons ago the switches used to be in front and yes many fires, burns and problems so they went up and to the back. I find it interesting that the NZ consumer council allows them here. but kitchens are no longer in the passageway [only in mine] so guess its less of a problem. ,

Front knobs have a childproof feature, try them

arabelle, Mar 10, 6:25am
Thats good to hear

tygertung, Mar 10, 8:07am
Our oven has the knobs on the front but fortunately the children have never turned it on. Stove has them on the top.

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 10, 9:08am
It was that problem that eventually got my LL to replace the Westinghouse. After three years of only one element functioning properly it was decided cheaper to replace the whole thing that just the simmerstats.
After three years it took me a while to get used to having a fully functioning appliance.

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 10, 9:10am
The only one that is a damned nuisance is the cleaning thing. I have put aluminium trays under the elements to catch spills but getting them in and out is a pain. Still, they do the job seeing lifting the top isn't an option.

arabelle, Mar 10, 9:52am
I wonder which Aussie designed them, and yes I do a quick wipe out if the element does have a spill. I do like no exposed element in the oven itself. as for the wasted space, that could be used for storage, underneath is a bit frustrating [I dont have a proper kitchen so no benches]

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 10, 11:07am
One who does not cook I suspect, like the non public transport users who design routes and timetables!

van.wilson, May 25, 10:01am
Hi all - stove needs replacing soon. Most of the free standing models now have the knobs in the front not at the back. We have toddlers in the house and I am worried this is a safety issue (busy fingers).
Is this an issue in reality or am I over cautious?
And which model/brand is recommended?
Thanks !

ryanm2, May 25, 10:37am
A lot still have knobs at the back like Westinghouse, Simpson, F&P etc

lythande1, May 25, 10:56am
My new oven has knobs at back. Westinghouse ceramic top.

van.wilson, May 25, 11:22am
Great! Is Westinghouse a good brand?

apple27, May 25, 1:03pm
Do not get a Parmco - mine drives me nuts!

pamow69, May 25, 9:27pm
Yes and also F&P for stoves. The makes with the knobs at front are usually the cheap nasty ones you get from the likes of Bunnings, Trade Depot etc. Avoid them and stick with the known brands. F&P elements are permanently wired in not loose pull out ones which get damaged easily. The F&P ones swing up for cleaning of the drip bowl.

pamow69, May 25, 9:31pm
Lol ! Found that out have you? Sorry you got stung. Has the writing been rubbed off the stainless steel panel yet? It will unless you rub gently with a soft damp cloth. Do not use any jif like cleaner.

apple27, May 26, 12:34pm
That's just happened to me! I used stainless steel cleaner made especially for stoves and the writing has come off. This is my second Parmco oven - the first was replaced by them after failing multiple times, and now this replacement one won't work properly as one of the elements has died.

lythande1, May 26, 1:22pm
Mid range. Miele tops, but so expensive.
Parmo, and the non-brands avoid. Westinghouse is fine.
Had one before lasted ages.
