I tried it.The Rose cutting died and the potato grew really well.

Same experience as mrsvonflik but tried the trick of splitting the bottom of the cutting, placing a grain of wheat in the split and then planting near the parent, had great success!

A gardener down the road makes a nick in the rose bush stem above a shoot & then binds what looks like straw around this, & covers it with plastic. Roots develop in this medium, & later he cuts the whole stem & plants it, with great success.

Why? Just start your rose in some proper nutritious compost.

At least he will be able to see that the plant has made roots, so that he can choose the optimum time to plant the new bush. It obviously works very well for him

If that was to me I was googling how to do it and it came up so I wondered whether it would work.
I have really really rubbish soil so thought it might give things a kick start IYSWIM
