Overflow from head tank in roof

datoofairy, Jul 27, 1:19pm
For several weeks now there has been water pouring out of the overflow pipe from the header tank in my ceiling. It started as a trickle and is now a continuous stream. It's a Housing NZ house and I have contacted the call center 4 times but they insist I have to be at home and will only give me a 6 hour time frame. I work full time and we are understaffed and very busy, so I simply can't be there right now. They won't allow me to leave a key out or have a friend there instead. It's extremely frustrating.
My question is; will this be effecting my power bill? It's cold water.

If there’s an element in your header tank yes. But it sounds like it’s a holding tank for gravity feed cold water? If so, no. Ballcock repair, should be simple enough. Frustrating for you.

It's simple enough to unscrew the float valve and look at the rubber washer. Turn the cold water off at the road first. If you have to pay for your water, leave it off until it's fixed.

Why in a HNZ house then?

datoofairy, Jul 27, 3:05pm
Thanks golfdriver and trade4us2. They've told me I'm not allowed to try to fix it myself. I'm also not allowed to get my own plumber, unless I want to pay for it myself, they will not pay the bill if I do. They won't let me contact their plumber myself to make arrangements, or pass on my number for the plumber to ring me. No wonder so many HNZ are in such disrepair when the make it so very difficult to get repairs done.

ours used to do that when there was a bit of grit in the system where the water comes in, just needed a jiggle to fix it, can you get someone to go up there and have a look first?

datoofairy, Jul 27, 3:25pm
I'm reluctant to do anything to it myself in case I make it worse, especially as they've told me not to, as then it would become my problem to fix.

Meh call centre lol
Why not contact them and give them a time that works for you and inform them that they and not you will be liable for consequential damage from the un repaired leak

articferrit, Jul 27, 3:51pm
How will they know?, if it fixes it say it stopped by its self, and if it doesnt they wont know you tried and it cant get any worse.

Issue them a 14 day notice to repair then. They have not left many other options,

can you not arrange for a plumber to come in the weekend

bill1451, Jul 28, 8:16pm
next thing that will happen is the overflow pipe will block and your ceiling will flood and you will get a bill cos you didnt do anything

I made a total of 6 phones calls to HNZ (all of which I can prove, and they will have recorded), changed my shifts so I could be here but no plumber showed up, arranged to have a friend be here but that wasnt allowed, was willing to fix it myself or get my own plumber but was told I wasnt allowed to, tried to make direct arrangements with their plumber but also wasnt allowed to - how is that me not doing anything about it?
Its fixed now, so all good.

How would the plumber know that the friend is not you?

alpha111, Jul 30, 5:04pm
Ring John Campbell at Checkpoint on Radio NZ. It can be confidential.See if he can sort it. It might help others.
