You need Washi tape.
When you mask on the glass, make sure you leave about 1-2mm gap between the tape and the timber, so the paint seals the timber to the glass.

But I'm not sure I'm reading correctly where you had the problem?
Are you saying the wall paint bled onto the frame paint on the architrave or something?

You wouldn't normally use tape there. You would just cut it in by hand.
Using tape would mean you have to use a "low tack" probably, which could be part of the problem.

Just ordinary masking tape used for car spraying & yes it has got into the timber .I used it as my hands not as steady as used to be trying to cut in to the frames .

due to the fact timber is never that smooth like cars a trick to use is mask then put some of the wood work colour over masking on to wall let dry then paint wall, another is a thin bead of nomore gaps on masking to wall.

a professional painter mite help

professional painters do not mask because of the seeping behind tape. A good painter will have no problem cutting into edge of frame.

He will also have a razorblade scraper to remove any boo boos when dry

its much quicker to just cut-in , masking takes as long to do as cutting in! and you aren't guaranteed a flawless finish upon removal ,as you have discovered.

Great tip. Thanks jkp (very disconcerting that you have my brothers exact initials. Lol.) Have to paint a black fireplace next to whiteish cupboards tomorrow. Will definitely do this.
