Hello. I am painting a metal box. I have primed and brushed on a layer of red enamel paint. I want to add a layer of black and then the plan is to sand bits of that black back so that some of the red shows through (shabby chic). I wanted to gloss it after rubbing back the black. Is that possible somehow for a DIY on enamel? I thought wax, but the Bunnings fella in the paintshop said that was a bad idea.
Help appreciated.

I would have used spray paint, then a clear coat over the final result. Car spray paint.

I had imagined clear too. I thought I could buy an aerosol of clear. Apparently not said the Bunnings guy.
What would happen if I brushed on a layer of wood varnish over the black? I suppose that might just flake off after some time, is that right?

Of course you can buy an aerosol of clear coat, go to a proper paint supplier and ignore the corporate retailer.

Bunnings sell clear coat, I buy it to finish outside art .

Thank you all. I shall walk into a shop with my head held high and request an aerosol of clear coat.
So masking the red outline / section isn't an option then
