On the windows we are not intending on upgrading (retro if we can, aluminium 2nd choice) we have some cracks, there are no soft spot on the wood. So advise please as i want to strip these windows back and re paint. My question is around these splits or cracks. What kind of filler or resin should i be using please. Photo is of one of the splits along the bottom sill https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/835864167.jpg

They have made a sharp edge on the timber. That's why the paint hasn't protected the timber and also why it has split.
Paint won't work on a sharp edge. It needs to be removed or cut back or whatever, then sanded and primed before painting.

Sand it back, use a flexible filler between the tile & sill, water can get in to the underside of the sill where there is no protection.Being a sill it will take a beating from the high uv rays in NZ,probably be tempted to use an oil based product as it’s more durable, even try a matt or flat finish

Sand it back and clean out any splits. Pour as much Everdure into them as you can then fill with epoxy filler (it will act as a glue as well as a filler). Then undercoat/topcoat with oil-based (try Resene 'Cool-colour'). Do on hot summers day so no moisture trapped.
Have done most of mine here in the heat of Nelson and they look a million dollars - after 5 years they still look sparkling new.
