Hi all - help for ideas for a SE-facing corner!

I want a nice lush shrub (preferably flowering/fragrant) which will fill up a small (1 m x 1 m) corner off my deck which is SE facing. It gets good morning sun and more in summer but between April and October it's fairly shaded (but gets a wee bit in the evening as well). And I'm in a VERY windy/coastal rural area so while the spot has some shelter, it still gets more wind than your average urban garden. I've prepared it all ready to go and will prob underplant some ground-cover or small annual flowers. The soil is GREAT, free-draining and fertile so there's no problem there. I should also mention that it's not suitable for ferns - it's not damp or shady enough.

Ideally it needs to grow to no more than 1-2 metres although I can keep it trimmed.

I'm stumped for ideas. What do you reckon? These are the ones I had in my head but none GRAB me:

kawakawa (nice but I already have these)
hydrangea (not sure about success in exposed area)
crepe myrtle (prob a bit delicate for coastal wind?)
hebe (a wee bit boring but possible)
lemon verbena (good fragrance and useful in kitchen but I have it in my herb garden already)
Choisya (again problem with wind?)

If anyone can add any other ideas please do - I'm usually not too bad at deciding on plants but I'm having trouble with this corner! I'm not fussy on native or exotic, I'm more wanting something that's attractive in terms of foliage/flowers/fragrance as people will see it and brush against as they come up the steps into my house.

Thanks for any ideas :-)

Gardenia? Some of the newer Pepper trees/Horopito such as moulin rogue have some nice coloured leaves

Horopito! Yes! Thank you. I will investigate that.

Loropetalum? Mum had 1 in similar position in a big pot. Looked awesome. Maybe 1-1.5 metres high including pot.
