Help with identifying 2x plants please

sooby, Oct 1, 4:09pm
hi guys,

We have two plants in need of ID please: (Could this one be a pumpkin?)

https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/652467413.jpg and this larger plant / tree: (potentially a native?) https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/652469160.jpg
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/652469238.jpg Second shot shows a few of the leaves have fallen off, is this a sign the tree isn't doing well? Thanks!

I think the first one is either Angelica or Bear's Breeches Acanthus.

2nd one is a Pseudopanax or Five finger, yes a native - looks like a purple leaved one. If that is the size of it in the 3rd photo your doing well, the fancier ones dont usually get that big.

1st one is acanthus, spreads easily and a bit prickly, tall greenish flowers
2nd one is five finger, you can prune it, grows reasonably quickly.

thanks everyone,

This five finger seems to drop its leaves almost all year round and makes a mess, is it worth keeping?

The choice is yours. People complain about dirty messy decidious trees which drop all their leaves over a 6 to 8 week period and then it is done for the year. On the other hand, I find evergreens far more messy as they shed leaves all year round making a constant mess and continuous work.
