I have quite a big area which has been cleared and would like to plant some thing, there a few trees not that big in it and I guess they take a lot out of the soil and quite hard digging because of roots, I do like colour so any suggestions, we live in South Canterbury.

You cleared it and want to start over? Remember trees grow. How about something small, Port Wine Magnolia perhaps? Smaller, can be hedged if you want. pretty flowers.

Would putting down some bags of compost & scattering wildflower or other annual seeds be an option? Or do you want shrubs etc?

Not much to go on - one man's big is another man's tiny! Perhaps a few photos wouldn't go amiss and also an indication of soil type, orientation and protection would help get you the most helpful advice.
