Building consent for bathroom Christchurch

catdog68, Sep 14, 10:24am
Does anyone know if I need to get a building consent to knock down the wall between the bathroom and toilet (non loading bearing) and do a complete renovation i.e. reline, tile, put in new toilet, frameless shower and a bath and vanity? Have looked on the council's website but couldn't find anything. We will be doing most of the work ourselves bar plumbing and tiling.

Ring the building section of Council, don;t divulge where you are , but ask hypothetical questions.

you will probably need a consent for the waterproofing of the shower at least

Toilet/ bathrooms are the most expensive rooms for the size, in any building
Plumbing
Electrical
General building construction
Sewage
Ventilation

Be careful what you tell the council.

What we were told--- If just changing the shower for a "like" shower in the same position (same for the bath, toilet, and vanity) the council said just go for it. If you move things Then you need consent.
We took out a shower with a tray and wall lining and put in a frameless which still has a tray but they said if we were to put in a tiled shower and no tray (wet area) we would need the consent. We tiled walls and floor and have underfloor heating. Led lighting is great. Our sparkly and plumber were top notch.
There are showers with trays (Atlantis) that you can tile and they don't need a consent. We did not do this as we figured a smooth wall cleans easier.

Unless you have another toilet elsewhere in the house why would you put the toilet in the bathroom when it is already separated? I would leave this alone as it is a selling point and much more convenient if you have children or an elderly person. See if you can do what you want for renovations in just the current bathroom. if you get a bathroom planner who has knowledge of current trends and products they will be able to help.

Was that the OP's question?

shanreagh, Sep 16, 9:49am
Bathroom planners would/could have been a first up as they know the rules re renovatinmg/consents etc. why would you ask on a message board where unless the people responding have a detailed knowledge of the condtions that apply in OP's particular location it is mostly speculation.

You must be a bathroom planner touting for business! The OP asked a very reasonable question and received some very reasonable answers.

even removing a non load bearing wall can affect structure
