If you have a faulty element the RCD will trip eventually, There was probably no hot water heating for a while as the power company turns it remotely off to reduce demand sometimes. it will start to reheat sometime if everything is ok

2 scenarios:
Your cylinder element died or The hot water relay in power meter is off, in which case you ring the power co.

Sounds like your element has failed , that’s why the the breaker has tripped. If you are on a day/night rate it will trip again once the ripple control kicks back in tonight.

thanks - contacted the power co last night and rung again today to get an update - they didn't have job logged! so annoyed as feel like crap and could do with a shower! realise other people without power so not complaining too much.
so if cylinder element has died (cylinder has 2007 on it) does that mean replacement of whole new cylinder or can the element just be replaced - our last places the hw cylinders were still going strong decades later!

Just the element can be replaced.

It could just be a badly wired element, but a sparky will be able to check that. If the element needs replacing, the cylinder will have to be drained, which may not be easy. My element has lasted 25 years.

thanks yes our last one was old too, and the other property was from the 70's - hoping it just something simple and cheap!
