Bare rooted rose plants

Brought àbout 10 of them 2 days before . They are in transparent plastic bags and roots in sawdust. My question is how long can you keep them in the bags as there is new leaves coming out of the cut canes also is it all right to plant them in prepared bed with compost directly in the ground then cover the ground in wood shavings. Thanks in advance for all the answers.

I personally would remove them from the wrapping, even if you only plant them in soil temporarily (heeling in) until you are ready to plant them. Plastic acts like a glasshouse and you do not want new shoots on roses right now. As long as your compost is well rotted and well mixed with the soil that is fine as should any wood shavings be.

It should be cold enough where you live to keep them for up to a month unless the sawdust gets bone dry. Try storing then in a cool dark space.Advoid warm and sunny spots, so they don't continue to sprout.

Not any woodshavings - only untreated! And remember - that will take nitrogen from the soil. Don't add nitrogen now but do keep a close eye when growth starts and feed on a regular basis (good rose fert) - they are gross feeders when they get started - they'll need 3 - 4 feeds throughout the growing season.
