I don't know how long to fruiting. I'd hazard a guess and say that you could move it. mine was only about 20cm high and recovered well :)

jules., Nov 5, 12:49am
woohoo i went to check on my veges after all the rain thru the night and i have 6/8 potato plants up! of all the corn, toms, cucumbers, lettuces etc, ive only managed to lose 1 tomato seedling and 1 corn seedling. feeling prety good about it all about now :) we collected nearly 2 dozen strawberries today and the kids are having a great time with all the fresh peas too :)

jules., Nov 5, 1:02am
thanks sean, i will give it a go, its in a terible spot, smushed in the feijoa tree hedge, so it will live or die either way :)

juliewn, Nov 5, 3:03am
Hi Sean. yummmm. :-). what a great selection of fruit is growing in your orchard. there'll surely be bountiful harvests in years to come.

I'm going to add - probably next autumn - winter as they're now out of stock. a 3 variety grafted apple - Granny Smith, Braeburn and Cox's Orange Pippin. have you considered a double or triple grafted tree for an apple tree to plant. there are quite a number of varieties available - and they'll spread the harvesting time over the two or three varieties.

Hi Jules.
How is your garden growing. I guess you're harvesting many types of veges now.

books4nz, Nov 5, 6:23am
That's great Jules - lovely to see kids enjoying their newly picked veges - I bet they taste good.

Kitkarlie - I've been drooling over my copy of Homegrown:Herbs for the past few days. I especially love the first few pages showing different herb gardens - something to emulate. I do feel smug I've achieved half a chamomile lawn, albeit with other herbs(pennyroyal and carpeting thymes) in it, plus a good scattering of selfseeded heartsease.

jules., Nov 6, 8:12pm
found a second loquart tree aswell, have a spot in mind, just need to wait as i sprayed it a week ago.
hi julie, only getting strawberries so far. shouldnt be long for the peas now.
all the corn, courgettes, gherkins, lettuce, cucumbers are coming along nicely with the bit of rain and good hot days.
the tomatos are just about big enough to go in the ground, just collecting enough clear fizzy drink bottles to go over them to keep them safe for the first few weeks (we dont drink it, so have to ask around), almost there :)

raewyn64, Nov 6, 8:57pm
Jules - how are you using the soft drink bottles for watering!I want to do the same but am concerned that all the water will just drain out immediately until it is empty - how long does the water last in one of your bottles!
Thanks for any tips you have on using them for the tomatoes.

books4nz, Nov 6, 9:59pm
I just read in the NZ Gardener magazine that you can use a terracotta pot - the kind that's not been sealed and has a roughish surface inside and out - the article was to place it beside plants in a glasshouse - fill with water, and the water will slowly seep through the pot to keep the plant watered - it would work outside too.

jules., Nov 6, 11:14pm
nice to see all the wee vege seedlings flourishing with the recent rainy weather :)

jules., Nov 7, 2:01am
Some of my onions have flowers, does this mean they are had it!

juliewn, Nov 7, 4:18am
Please. send some here Jules!. we've had a few night time showers lately - however I've watered the gardens tonight as plants were drooping from lack of water - hopefully rain will come soon. Have a great weekend Everyone. :-)

juliewn, Nov 7, 5:10am
Hi Everyone. I'm growing watermelon's too, and rockmelon. yum!

Hi Jules. one of my shallots and a couple of leeks are going to seed here. it's been really dry for the last few weeks, the soil is very dry - I'm wondering if it might be due to that.

Have a lovely week. :-)

soc_butterfly, Nov 7, 11:08pm
you bury them to halfway up in soil, then just fill with water.

jules., Nov 7, 11:32pm
Yeah, we've had a few quite dry weeks already aswell.
Oh well, will try and keep the rest watered and see what happens.
Thanks.

jules., Nov 8, 12:50am
hi raewyn, soc butterfly is right, just put a few holes in the cap to let the water flow out, they have to be a good nail size or they get clogged with dirt and dont drain out. but if it gets blocked, just pull it out carefully and give it a clean and put it back in the same hole.
but.im using mine as mini green houses while the seedlings are still small. just cut the top off and use the bottom 3/4 over the seedlings, i put a few small holes in to let the air in a bit and the condensation out so the plants dont cook under there in the hot sun.
hope that helps you :)

jules., Nov 8, 12:52am
just saw your pics whiskey, thats a great idea, even better then the fizzy bottles as they are larger and hold more water, therefore last longer aswell :)
very cool!

Hi. this was in the budgeting thread in "Recipes" "An economical spray for the garden. here is my one that I found online to use instead of blitzem which I didn't want to use because of pets and kids. Garlic and lemon spray: peel and cut up 5 cloves of garlic and put into a bowl or jar with 2 tablespoons cooking oil (any kind) and leave overnight in another bowl. Cut up 3 lemons roughly, cover with 3 cups boiling water and leave overnight. The next day, strain the two mixes and combine them and put into a spray bottle. Then spray the plants and the dirt as well. So far (fingers crossed!lol), it has been a week and no live snails, quite a few dead snails and no bites out of my plants." posted by guitarman525

thanks juliewn i'll have to try that one.

whiskey13, Nov 10, 6:58pm
Everything i planted at labour weekend has started to pop up

jules., Nov 10, 9:47pm
the snails. .at our house only seem to like the top of the section, i have not seen any in my new 6x3 raised garden. i did sprinkle some slug bait but havnt even seen a dead one. maybe they are too lazy to go that far! but thats ok with me, hopefully i havnt just jinxed it :) the rains gone now and im back to using the hose or the water i have caught in all my buckets i leave out to catch the run off from the shed roof when it is raining. better go and check for eggs (we are getting 3 a day now) and talk encouragingly to the veges :) have a great rest of the day :)

jules., Nov 12, 12:36am
. bump :)

juliewn, Nov 12, 2:58am
I bet it's rewarding to gather your own eggs and harvest your own veges Jules. My vege garden is growing slowly - I visited an organic shop here today, and bought two kinds of potatoes "Reds" and "Moonlight" - neither of which I've heard of before - to plant in my garden, which will then give me five varieties with the Rua, Agria and Urenika potatoes I already have growing. I have tomatoes almost ready to plant out - a bit late - though hopefully the warm weather now will keep them growing well. I have 45 plants almost ready - most of them Beefsteak, so I'll once more be able to make my own tomato sauce, relish, pasta sauce, puree, soup, etc.etc. and for the first time I'll have grown my own tomatoes for these.

juliewn, Nov 12, 2:59am
I must get cucumber's, pumpkins, butternut's, watermelon and rockmelon in soon - building our house hasn't given a great deal of time for gardening lately. the house is almost finished and we move in next week. Yay! I was talking to a neighbour's Mum today, and telling her about the house - and that with it being built up by two concrete blocks off the ground, it means that the exterior lights under the eaves are that bit higher. making the exterior light for the laundry and outdoor bathroom to be the perfect height to shine right across the 11 metre x 9 metre vege garden area. now is that good planning or what! lol.

jules., Nov 12, 3:11am
wow juliewn, you will be busy with 45 tomato plants, i thought i was excesive with 21 :) sounds like the house is coming along nicely now, wont be much longer beforw you are all finished and all the running around, building, painting, papering etc will be but a distant memory! you will be able to spend all that extra time in the garden. sounds good to me. im really just new to vege growing, although i have had small gardens over the last 5 years, its only this year ive decided its really fun. im just seeing now how self suficient i can be, if only i could grow petrol, hehe :)
