I can't believe I almost forgot to post about my new treasures - I went shopping at our local garden centre yesterday with some GardenNZ vouchers. and bought a wonderful 'Golden Queen' Peach tree - our favourite peach - it's over 2 metres tall. Another peach - 'Golden Haze' - an early fruiting variety that's similar to a Golden Queen. A 'Queen Giant' Nectarine - late season, with creamy flesh and red skin. An 'Aprigold' Apricot - dwarf type,a 'Granny Smith' Apple - dwarf type, an 'Albany Surprise' Grape, a Thornless Blackberry, a Lemonade and a 'Carters Navel Orange.' I just went outside to check. I'm sure I purchased a yellow flesh early season nectarine and it's not with the other trees - will check back at the garden centre tomorrow. I'm waiting for the earth mover to bring a load of topsoil to spread and level on part of the section, then those trees will be planted - can't wait. :-)

Yes, I did the survey. Left blank what I did not feel like answering, and asked them for more articles about gardening for the disabled. Stevee, I will try to get to the Paekak market but early morning events are only creatures of legend for me. haha. But you never know.

Well juliewn All i got this weekend was an apricot tree I've had my heart set on all week. A self-fertile dwarf Apricot called Katy Cot. I just finished planting it.It's over cast in Christchurch and I've just finished planting out my sweetpea seedlings as well!I have too many and will give some to a friend.

well, you all sound like you have had a very productive weekend! wish i could say the same.after having a good spring clean around the place yesterday, it was time for my daughters 7th birthday party today. we had 10 little girls running around chasing the chooks with painted faces, poor chooks, but they liked all the left over lunch scraps and they even got cake too! was very fun, but im knackered! i keep thinking i must get to planting the seeds i have waiting, but i guess that will be a job for another day now :)

Well it's been a cracker of a day in Christchurch and after visiting my brother in hospital, I've just finished planting 16 asparagus crowns (i hope i haven't left it too late). I dug a trench and mounded up some dirt in the bottom, then placed the crowns on top with the roots spread out, half filled in the trench with well rotted horse manure then watered them with sheep pellets made into a liqiud fertiliser, then filled in the rest of the trench with dirt.Hope i've done it all right.

Sean - I did it too. I think that one is an either/or question. I just answered each one as close to what I felt and figured it wasn't crucial to be exact. I would guess it's basically so they can see what level of expertise Get Growing generally needs to be aimed at ie do they need more 'how to' or more, 'what to do with all the fabulous produce'. LOL as I'm writing this I wish I'd asked them to add a bit more of judging amounts to plant. We've got fabulous sprouting broccoli I put in last autumn - it is georgous but not nearly enough! Whiskey, I grew asparagus in Christchurch and I think it's the perfect place for it. I didn't take nearly as much care as I have with the stuff I've planted here(Kapiti) yet I had scrumptious spears!

Where I've planted my asparagus, it's east facing, will only get the morning sun in summer, until about 1 or 2pm but won't get the sun at the hottest part of the day. Both my partner and i love asparagus and i dont know why it's taken me 12 years to plant some.

jules., Aug 23, 4:20am
Ive just planted a whole lot of spuds.do I have to worry about frosts if they have not popped thru the soil yet!

stevee6, Aug 25, 4:42pm
Sean - you're a legend!

juliewn, Aug 26, 7:10am
Hi Dave. I don't know if you can purchase Monarch Butterflies anywhere. plant some swan plants (they're available on Trademe and at garden centres) - and you'll have them come to your garden.

juliewn, Aug 26, 7:14am
Hi Whiskey. I saw the Katycot apricot's - there are so many varieties of fruit trees available now, it sure can get confusing! I found my nectarine tree - I'd left it in the row near the fruit tree's at the garden centre, and hadn't got it up to the counter - they'd found it and popped it back. I've purchased a dwarf yellow fleshed nectarine - with masses of buds and flowers on. it's amazing the growth on these dwarf trees. I can't wait till the trees all have fruit.

juliewn, Aug 26, 7:16am
ps. we were at the Palmers Bethlehem store today - near Tauranga - their fruit tree prices were higher than our small town privately owned local garden centre - the peach and nectarine trees were each $10 to $15 higher than here. adds up to a lot when buying quite a few trees.

whiskey13, Aug 26, 8:06am
Hi juliewn, can i ask you a question about my apricot tree! It's just a baby and i want to know if i should take some/most of the flowers off for the frist year to give the tree a change to get established, or just let it flower and fruit as normal! I know some fruit trees won't fruit for the frist few years but I'm not sure with my one.And i know with some trees you thin the flowers. So much to learn!

stevee6, Aug 26, 4:36pm
Bumping for new vege gardeners. It's raining here - again! This winter I've blessed my sandy soil over and over after seeing the mud and mess everywhere else.

juliewn, Aug 26, 9:48pm
Hi Lovely People. I was just in the NZ Gardener website getting a link for another thread, and saw this: "Homegrown3: Herbs: Our next special collector's edition is a celebration of homegrown herbs ??

juliewn, Aug 27, 9:37am
Hi Whiskey. Me too! Thank goodness for these gardening threads to learn from. I've read here and in gardening books that it's best to take the blossom off the first year - however, when I purchased my trees, including an apricot, last weekend, the owner of the garden centre (who has had the business for more than 30 years) said 'you'll get a few fruit off those this year'. the subject got changed and I forgot to ask him more about it. so maybe it's ok to let a few grow. and I think I'll let a couple of fruit grow on each tree and remove the rest. I can't wait to be able to pick fresh fruit from my own trees.
