LOL Sean - so I guess your nose will also be in every seed catalogue ever written this winter while you plan your whole-section vege garden! BTW - after reading Homegrown/NZ Gardener & Get Growing, my seed bill so far is over $80! I'd better do some more listings so I can afford 'em!

simplesean, Aug 3, 5:09pm
I got my free Kings seeds catalogue the other day too.

Had a georgous day here yesterday, so of course I had volunteer work which took up a good part of the day. Today, it's horrible, so I'm free *sigh*. My new raised gardens are looking wonderful though. We didn't have quite enough soil to fill them all but another trailer load will do the job. Meantime I've moved my raspberries, pink flowered strawberries and alpine strawberries, and also my white and redcurrant bushes into the long bed on the fence, and put my lemon balm, safely secured into a sunken plastic pot, between the two currants. One of the four square beds now has its centrepiece of a dwarf feijoa with a white rose nestled beside it, and the other filled bed has a blackcurrant as its centrepiece. We built the beds square to give us as much growing room as possible, and with each having a tree or shrub in the centre, we can grow our veges in a metre wide strip on four sides of each, which should give us plenty of space and be easy to reach.

A great site with heaps info on self sufficiency is pathtofreedom.com or their older site urbanhomestead.org. This family have a 1/4 acre section in America (the fatherspent alot of years in NZ) and grow over 6,000 pounds of vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs a year from this garden, their aim this year is for 10,000 ponunds. They live from it themselves and sell to local restaurants. They are entirely organic and live off the grid from biodiesel. They have an enormous site and their efforts are well beyond what any of us would be able to manage but for sheer inspiration they are amazing. I spend hours in here.
I have both the Homegrown books and they are my new bibles - I have big plans - roll on spring!

interesting website tumbleweed does anyone know.I have some seeds I want to plant ready for spring and was thinking about using egg carton.do you know if that would work!.

tumbleweeds2011, Aug 5, 11:25pm
Yep drewboy, they are fine I use them myself. Then just put hole thing straight into garden

whiskey13, Aug 6, 7:37am
Toilet rolls is what i use (empty of course lol) to raise my seedlings. That way you can plant the whole thing into the ground when your ready, cos the cardboard disintegrates into the soil.Just started peas, carrots, and tomatoes on saturday

simplesean, Aug 7, 12:54am
I started a ginger beer bug today. got the recipe from the 2nd homegrown mag. i love Ginger beer!

goodbooks, Aug 7, 7:23am
Can someone help please - is it too early to start growing seedlings inside - ie - cabbage, cauliflower, silverbeet, etc. Thanks for help.

stevee6, Aug 7, 4:39pm
Goodbooks - unless you're still having hard frosts you can give them a try outside. Just put some weedmat or similar over the seed beds until they shoot to keep them warer.

drewboy, Aug 7, 9:01pm
